Microsoft has decided to retire their excellent Small Business Server suite, which has given excellent service to many thousands of small businesses for more than a decade. The removal of Small Business Server is part of Microsoft’s strategy to move users to their Office 365 cloud services. This will be an unwelcome proposition for many organisations that are considering an upgrade because their server is reaching the end of its useful life.
The official replacement for Small Business Server is Windows Server 2012 Essentials. The replacement product does not include Exchange for email, unlike its predecessor, and collaboration or SharePoint. Therefore you must either consider buying Exchange separately or moving to Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud service. If you don’t want a cloud based solution because of privacy concerns, poor Internet connectivity or you just prefer the peace of mind of a complete in-house solution then updating with Microsoft will involve additional complexity and expense.
One benefit of moving your server to Microsoft’s cloud is that it will update with almost every new Microsoft release. This may work fine for large organisations but we have found that smaller enterprises update on long cycles and therefore simply do not see the benefit. We have also found that there is a solution right under our noses that offers both a replacement and additional benefits to Small Business Server. Linux!
